Your weekly peek inside David Atlanta

imageThe June 4 issue of David Atlanta goes shirtless. It is summer, right?

The cover image is supposed to evoke images of a dance floor packed with shirtless hotties, as the story it teases is about the newest addition to Atlanta’s gaynightlife scene — Mixx Atlanta.

With gay nightlife taking a hit across the country, Mixx hopes to avoid that trend by offering a different vibe than what folks have become used to — most notably, a boutique-sized dance club.

“Super clubs just don’t make it anymore, even in New York City they can’t support a number of super clubs anymore,” Millier says. “So this is sort of the trend, going to smaller boutique clubs, so I think the timing is right for this.”

The new club also features a state-of-the-art lighting system and is the first gay club in Atlanta that includes a Playmotion screen, which allows dancers to interact with the light system to create a cosmic experience on the dance floor.

After Mixx holds its grand opening weekend June 11-13, it plans to add a $5 cover, something that will differentiate it from Burkhart’s and its other neighbors in Ansley (and Midtown, for that matter). The venue says it’s not competing against other gay bars that don’t charge a cover, so it won’t drive patrons away. We’ll see.

“We’re just not in competition — they offer drag shows and we’re offering a dance club,” Millier says. “If you want to dance, this is where you go, and if you want to watch a show and drink, that’s where you go. We had no intentions of ever competing because I think we’re very different entities.”
