Women’s tackle football in Atlanta hits the field on Saturday.

That’s when the Atlanta Xplosion (1-2) opens its home schedule against the winless Palm Beach Punishers, part of an eight-game regular season that includes four home games. The season opened in mid April and runs, including playoffs, into late July.

The Xplosion, who again will play at Roswell High School, have been part of the local sports scene since 2003, when they joined the Independent Women’s Football League as the Atlanta Leopards. The team has won the Eastern Conference Championship for the last three years and in 2006, won the IWFL World Championship.

The gay-friendly IWFL launched in 2000 and has grown to include more than 1,600 women playing for 40 teams across North America. The Xplosion plays in the South Atlanta tier of the Eastern Conference with the Orlando Mayhem (4-0), Miami Fury (1-2) and the Punishers (0-3).
