UPDATE: A media alert from the Atlanta team issued this afternoon confirms that the team will announce its name, logo and colors during a press conference Wednesday.
Atlanta’s new WNBA team will soon have an identity. Team officials are expected to announce its name, unveil a logo and show off their colors during a press conference set for Wednesday afternoon at the East Lake Family YMCA.
The soon-to-be-named team opens its inaugural season on May 17 with a road game in Connecticut before debuting at Philips Arena on May 23 against Detroit. The team, which announced the hiring of Mary Meadors as head coach and general manager in November, has been adding staff and ramping up its operations since the WNBA delivered the franchise to Atlanta last October.
Also on Wednesday, Kristin Bernert, the WNBA’s vice president for team business development, is scheduled to speak to the Atlanta Executive Network, a gay business group.
The announcement of a team name, logo and colors comes after fans were able to vote on a handful of options. Choices for team name included the Dream, Flight, Sizzle and Surge. The finalists for the color scheme were navy blue and gold; green and gold; sky blue and red; hot pink, silver and black; and mint green, black and silver.
