Atlanta Fringe Festival opens Wednesday at multiple venues around town with a devotion to underrepresented theater, including LGBT shows, and a chance for Project Q readers to win tickets.
Fringe’s mission says it all: “to provide audiences a chance to explore their tastes and challenge their perceptions.” The festival runs Wednesday through Sunday and features 27 productions from artists across Atlanta and 10 other states. That includes at least five productions with gay themes and/or LGBT artists behind them.
And one lucky Project Q reader will win two vouchers to see any one of the festival’s 27 shows. Read on about the gay participants, and enter to win at the bottom of this post.
Some of the gay participants we’ve already met. We introduced you to Les Kurkendaal (top photo) via video. His one-man autobiographical “Christmas in Bakersfield” hilariously and poignantly explores interracial gay relationships May 10-13 at WonderRoot.
We also gave you a detailed heads up about Tonya Jone Miller’s “Threads” and Will Nolan’s “Lady Land!” (second photo) playing Thursday through Saturday at Mask Center.
As Atlanta Fringe prepares to open, we now also have word about “Strange Dreamz.” Kevin Thornton (third photo) turns his “Strange Dreamz” weekly podcast into a full production that combines stand-up comedy with storytelling and concert numbers to tell his story of a gay man’s search for love, sex and the meaning of life. It runs at the Mask Center Thursday through Sunday.
Also on tap from a gay artist is the new play “[Vampire] Medea” (bottom photo). Writer-director Augustin J. Correrro modernizes Euripides’ Greek tragedy about a despotic Queen scorned. The monarch’s tumultus drama and misery unfolds in one short night, and the audience bares witness to the tune of original music. It plays Thursday through Sunday at Horizons School Theatre.
So how can you win those vouchers for two to any Atlanta Fringe Festival performance? It’s easy to enter. Fill out the form below completely, and we’ll randomly select and contact the winner on Wednesday.
