The Armorettes’ Wild Cherry Sucret called it quits on Saturday with a mock funeral the likes of which haven’t been seen since the memorial service for Michael Jackson last July.
And that’s exactly how Tony Kearney wanted it. He’s performed with the Armorettes drag troupe as Wild Cherry for more than a decade. And he pulled out all of the stops for her last performance on Saturday at the Jungle.
Gold casket? Check. Shirtless pallbearers? Yes, those too. Performances by scores of current and former Armorettes? Indeed. Let’s not even get into the well-endowed sex toy used to pummel the casket at one point during the evening. Over the top? You betcha, and we would expect nothing less.
“The Armorettes don’t do anything halfway,” Kearney told Project Q Atlanta in advance of the homecoming services. “I was inspired by the over the top Michael Jackson funeral last year. I said, ‘When it’s time to go, Cherry needs a funeral like that, including the gold casket.’”
