When an album keeps getting pushed back, is it due to jockeying between artists and labels wanting ideal product placement in an increasingly competitive industry? Or does it just mean the product stinks? We’re just wondering as the list of delayed releases we’d like to eventually seems to grow every week.

Last month, Keri Hilson finally released “In a Perfect World” after several delays. Thankfully for Hilson, the album is a solid debut, but you can’t help but wonder about the others that don’t materialize.

After the flurry of activity surrounding the hit-making debut album from the Pussycat Dolls, lead singer Nicole Scherzinger began work on her solo debut album, “Her Name is Nicole.” That had been delayed for more than a year.

In 2007, Scherzinger did her best to land a hit single, including “Whatever U Like” with T.I., “Baby Love” with will.i.am, “Supervillian” and “Puakenikeni.” But nothing. She recently mentioned the possibility of the album’s release in the media and given the lackluster sophomore album from the Dolls (the dismal “Doll Domination”), maybe it’s wise for her to pursue a solo career more aggressively.

You have to go back to 2002 for Eve’s last album (“Eve-Olution”), so fans were ready for something new. In 2007, Eve released the bangin’ “Tambourine” and the formulaic “Give It to You” featuring Sean Paul, but the new album (ironically titled “Here I Am”) never materialized. With her television show off the air and no recent film roles, Eve’s fans are jonesin’ for a healthy dose of the hip-hop diva. Here’s hoping an album comes sooner rather than later.

It’s been more than three years since Missy Elliott’s last album (“The Cookbook” in 2005), so to say that “Block Party” was one of the most anticipated releases of 2008 is an understatement. The album release date, though, kept getting pushed back. “Ching-a-Ling” was supposed to be the debut single, but you’ve got to wonder if its poor reception caused the album’s delay.

At times, it’s tough to understand why an album doesn’t get released. But in the case of disaster de jour Lindsay Lohan, (photo) the reason is more clear. Her third album, “Spirit in the Dark,” was scheduled for release last year. The lead single “Bossy” was received quite well, especially among the gays thanks to some kick-ass remixes. Even with all of her drama, let’s hope “Bossy” wasn’t a fluke. We want Lohan to deliver a solid album of pop music.

Like Lohan, Whitney Houston was a tabloid’s dream for years. Although it seems Houston’s finally gotten her life back on track, her comeback album is still in the works. Since the diva did such an amazing job at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy bash, hopefully that’s an indication her drama is trending down while her music is going up.

It’s not just the ladies, though. British pop sensation Robbie Williams was on tap to release “Let’s Swing Again,” a sequel to the smash hit “Swing When You’re Winning” in 2001. But the release date was repeatedly pushed back before disappearing off the music radar. Williams did such an amazing job with the vocal standards on the first album, so it is sad to think another helping has been nixed.

And then there’s poor JC Chasez. The former *NSYNCer’s sophomore solo album has been pushed back over and over and over, despite the apparent completion of several collaborations with producer/wunderkind/former bandmate Justin Timberlake.

Then there’s former gay porn star Colton Ford (photo). He seems poised to fare better than some others as “Under the Covers,” a collection of cover tunes including Britney Spears’ “Trouble” and Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better,” was scheduled to drop in March, then April, now June. Ford gave us some pretty amazing dance hits last year, so cross your fingers for new music from this stud in time for summer parties.
