Watch diver Tom Daley come out of his complicated gay closet

Team UK diver and teen dream Tom Daley made gay hearts flutter and gay tongues wag on Monday. That’s when he stopped protesting too much and just came out about his relationship with a man in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

While you reserve a table for Captain Obvious, party of one, stop for a minute to give the kid a break. The 19-year-old Daley handled the news just as we predicted – on his own terms in a second coming out (video above). The first one came earlier this year when he flat-out denied rampant gay rumors.

Now he invites us into his bed to hear that he was “misquoted” (at exhaustingly great length, mind you) when he reportedly came out as straight. The pillow talk also incudes how “surprised” he was to fall for his new man.

“Come Spring this year, my life changed, massively, when I met someone and they make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great.

“Well that someone is a guy. And it did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen. But it wasn’t until Spring this year that something just clicked, it felt right. And I was like: OK.”

In the video, the bronze medal British heartthrob never says the word “gay” or “bisexual,' but he does say, “of course I still fancy girls” in passing. He also begs for fans to stick with him on his road to Rio in 2016. Whatever. We’ve been there, and it’s OK if two baby steps forward come with one step back when coming out. Dipping his toe in with a little reticence, toying with fibs – perhaps even lying to himself – and slipping into the role of apologist are all part of the process for many.

Of course, we’ve been fans since the moment the little jock in the tiny Speedo stepped onto the platform at the London 2012 games. Now those Daley shower fantasies and equally sexy pin-up boy visions rise up again for gay fans. And you better believe that includes those who want to see fellow gay Olympian Matthew Mitcham explore Daley’s ass even further than he already has. All year long.

In the meantime, welcome aboard, Tom. Help yourself to our recruitment prizes. Don’t mind if they’re a little picked over by the likes of celebs like Wentworth Miller and Bob Harper, who took way longer than you did to take the plunge publicly.
