Gay City Council member Alex Wan and colleague Lamar Willis toasted the start of Atlanta Pride during a reception Oct. 6 that also included accolades for state Rep. Simone Bell.

The reception at Halo Lounge was the second event last week from elected officials teasing the start of Atlanta Pride. On Oct. 4, Mayor Kasim Reed held a rooftop reception at City Hall.

Willis has hosted a pre-Pride reception for several years. But it marked the initial one for Wan, who was celebrating his first Pride as the City Council’s only openly gay member.

imageDuring the event, Wan and Willis (top photo) presented a proclamation from the City Council commending state Rep. Simone Bell, who took office in December as the General Assembly’s first openly lesbian African-American lawmaker. The document praised Bell for her community activism and advocacy for LGBT issues.

Representative Bell has inspired countless people through her community involvement and public service. She has also spent many years fighting for equality and justice for the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender (GLBT) community.

In addition to Bell (second photo), Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts also attended the event.

On Oct. 4, the City Council recognized Pride organizers and welcomed participants with a proclamation. The Fulton County Commission presented a similar measure on Oct. 6.
