Voting’s never been this fun

amir_khan_blog.jpgIt’s never too late to vote. Again and again.

No, we’re not talking about the never-ending race for the Democratic presidential nod. We’re talking jocks.

Thanks to Layne, a gay sports fan, avid reader and blogger based in Mount Vernon, Wash., there’s his annual “King of the Hardwood,” a tournament that lets readers pick the hottest athlete from among 64 candidates. It’s a competition he started in 2003, when NFL player Jeremy Bloom won it all. If only picking a president were this fun.

Here’s how it works: Layne has pre-selected groups of athletes from eight areas – swimming and diving, track and field, hockey and Australian football, tennis, baseball, soccer, pro football and rugby. Every few days, there’s a new qualifying round. Vote for your favorites, check the running vote tallies on his blog and look for the final round of 64 in mid-March to coincide with the selections for the NCAA basketball tournament.

Round 1 qualifying opened last week, but you can still vote until Saturday. Same goes for Round 2, which was unveiled today. Each round includes a slide show of the sexy candidates. My favorite for Round 2? English boxing champion Amir Khan (photo). Now this is democracy at its best.

Thanks to Outsports for puling us away from CNN’s non-stop primary coverage by making us aware of this race.
