Nothing wins like winners. And for gay donors, brunch. The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund knows this strategy well, so it threw both at a well-heeled crowd in Atlanta. The fundraising event honored local LGBT politicians on Sunday.
A few hundred people gathered to hear from the first gay male Atlanta City Council member Alex Wan and Fulton County’s first black lesbian commissioner Joan Garner. The InterContinental Buckhead poured champagne and served grub to benefit the national group that helps gay people get elected with funds and training. Lesbian state Rep. Karla Drenner was there, and Garner attended with her partner, Fulton state judge Jane Morrison. Wan is running for re-election along with Doraville's Brian Bates, who was also at the brunch. Wan and Bates are just two of the metro area's contenders on a big gay election day.
The Victory Fund Champagne Brunch also celebrated a special guest who’s in the national gay spotlight. Texas state Rep. Mary Gonzalez got a standing ovation. U.S. House Rep. Patrick Maloney, the scheduled keynote speaker, was unable to attend thanks to the federal government shutdown, but he sent a video message of support.
