imageA packed weekend patio is nothing new to DJ Vicki Powell, but a Sunday “celebration of life” took on new meaning this week when she led Sunday Services at the alterna-bar Church.

To be more specific, Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium is the welcome addition to the Old Fourth Ward from the ever-churning mind of queer artist, barfly and gadabout Grant Henry (second photo).

imageSince opening in January, Church—for short—has become the little nightspot that could with an irreverent nod every night to that other kind of church that some people attend on Sundays.

But like those churches, Church provides a hangout with an “all are welcome” vibe, fellowship and spirits. Unlike them, they serve sangria instead of sacramental wine, and an “anything goes” vibe encourages all comers to let their hair down.

Henry, his artist alter ego Sister Louisa, and his band of artists and nomads began celebrating semi-regular Sunday Art Services unofficially in his loft about a year ago. Now that the bar is open, anyone who wants to drop by Church can be moved by the spirit any night of the week.

imageWhat’s in a name? At Church, look for things like Preach It Karaoke and special events like last Saturday, when you could celebrate The Rapture by having your photo taken with Jesus.

And then there’s the weekly Sunday Services, where the cray-cray got even more crunk this week with the return of Powell (bottom photo) and her summer Sunsets on the Patio party series.
