The change extends hours for licensed bars to sell alcohol from midnight on Sunday, Nov. 1 until 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. Sunday sales normally stop by law at 12 a.m. Venues licensed for alcohol sales on days except Sundays can sell alcohol from 12:01 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2.
The move is a gesture toward the Atlanta Pride festival and is aimed to curtail violations in the law by its celebrants. Atlanta Pride takes place Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Piedmont Park.
City Council President Lisa Borders (photo), a leading contender in the mayoral race, led the charge to issue the waiver. At her behest, City Council member Clara Smith introduced the measure to extend Sunday alcohol sales for Pride.
The waiver was approved by the City Council Public Safety committee on Oct. 13, and moved back to the full council for a final vote on Monday. There were no dissenting votes.
