Michelle Bruce, the transgender woman at the center of a lawsuit that reached the Georgia Supreme Court, spoke out today about the case.
On Monday, the court ruled in favor of Bruce in a lawsuit that alleged she misled voters because she is transgendered. She reacted to the decision today in a statement issued by Georgia Equality, the statewide gay rights group.
“Today is a great day for LGBT communities throughout Georgia and around the country. It is also a great day for people who support civil and human rights for all citizens. This lawsuit was meant only to discredit me in the eyes of the voters. The Supreme Court ruling will set a precedent to stop anything like this from happening to other transgender people who choose to run for public office.”
“We are all stronger with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities working together. We need to understand that those who oppose us benefit when we are divided. I do want to thank, Georgia Equally staff and its members, Victory Fund staff and its members, Lambda Legal, and the Human Rights Campaign staff and all of it members for supporting me in last year’s election and as this case worked its way through the courts.”
Southern Voice and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution both cover the court’s ruling.
