A diverse coalition of LGBT and progressive groups came together on Tuesday to help Atlanta mourn during a vigil downtown that drew a crowd of thousands.
The event, led by the LGBT Institute of the Center for Civil & Human Rights, was both a call to stand with the victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando and a call to action “against hatred and violence directed at LGBTQ people and all people.”
The vigil included the reading of the names of the 49 people who died in the attack, a somber remembrance that took eight minutes and included photos of the victims and a bell ringing for each one.
Estimates put the crowd at between 2,500 and 3,000 people at Tuesday's event on the plaza of the center. A vigil on Sunday in Midtown drew hundreds of people to the intersection of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue.
