Oh, the indignities of a Hollywood star wannabe.
On Tuesday, Jason Taylor places second on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” On Wednesday, word out of Miami is that the six-time Pro Bowl defensive end may be out of a job with the Dolphins.
Yes, those Dolphins. The ones that went 1-15 last season and had just one Pro Bowl player on their roster – Taylor. (He also was named NFL Man of the Year last season and ranks third among active players in sacks.)
The Dolphins and the NFL haven’t been pleased since Taylor went Hollywood and chose the TV show over voluntary workouts and minicamps with the team.
For weeks, Taylor and the new regime at the team – led by new Dolphins VP Bill Parcels – have been in a public spat. Coach Tony Sparano heightened the rhetoric on Wednesday by announcing that Taylor plans to skip all team activites between now and the start of the NFL season.
Taylor wants a trade. And a career in Hollywood, hoping to make the same sort of transition from sports to action roles that made Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson a movie star. With his size (6 feet 6 inches tall, 255 pounds) and good looks, that’s not a stretch. And apparently, he can dance.
“I want to win, period, and I would love to win in Miami,” he told the Associated Press on Saturday. “There are a lot of things out here going on, and a lot of opportunities coming up, but the plan is to play. Football is still my priority. I still have a passion to play football.”
