Just when we were to the point of exhaustion with state lawmakers and their inability to to move forward with legislation making it easier to drink on Sundays, they surprised us. On Wednesday, the state Senate -- wracked for weeks with conservative Christian guilt and hand wringing over the proposal -- approved it by a 32-22 vote.
So there, drunken naysayers. You are one step closer to Sunday sales of alcohol in stores. Now it's on to the House, where a committee already has a hearing set for Monday. Once it moves through there, Gov. Nathan Deal is expected to sign it. Then, sometime in the future, local communities get to vote. Win that one and then, finally, you can booze it up with more ease on Sundays.
An odd thing happened on the way to Senate passage this week. Seventeen of 36 Republicans voted against the bill -- that wasn't unexpected. But five of 20 Democrats voted nay, including state Sen. Vincent Fort. Really? The liberal, gay-loving Fort stumped us with that one. Not that Sunday alcohol sales is an inherently LGBT issue, though some gays and LGBT bar owners support it. But we figured he'd be all for boozing it up whenever we wanted.
Anyway, on to the House!
