Women’s league opens softball season

Women’s league opens softball season

imageWith a casual toss -- after a practice session and some informal instruction -- state Rep. Karla Drenner threw the ceremonial first pitch on Friday to open the third softball season for the Decatur Women's Sports League.

Several hours of softball commenced on two fields at Kelly C. Cofer Park in Tucker. The league continues play on Fridays for a season that stretches to late May. Drenner is the only openly gay member of the Georgia Legislature.

Women’s softball league opens play tonight

imageIf you're in Decatur tonight, be on the lookout for 300 lesbians carrying bats.

The Decatur Women's Sports League returns to Kelly C. Cofer Park in Tucker tonight for the start of their third season. State Rep. Karla Drenner, the only openly gay member of the Georgia Legislature, is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at 6:50 p.m. with nine games on two fields to follow The season continues on Friday nights into late May.

Gay jocks find home on the rink with GForce

imageYou'll forgive the GForce if they aren't dwelling on their loss to a bunch of straight guys earlier this year.

The gay hockey team, a collection of 15 players from cities across the country including Atlanta, lost a competitive match in January at the Friendship Cup, a part of the annual Aspen Gay Ski Week.

But now the team is in the middle of another battle, hoping to best 36 other gay sports clubs from across the country in a contest on Outsports.com. The site kicked off its Local Groups Challenge earlier this month and voting put GForce into the second round against Cheer San Francisco. (You can vote in the second round through Monday.)

ATTA swings into action with ‘Hooch event

imageSome 66 gay and lesbian tennis players from metro Atlanta battled for titles in 11 divisions last weekend during the Chattahoochee Doubles Classic.

The annual tournament from the Atlanta Tennis Team Association played out March 5-8 on courts in Piedmont Park and Decatur.

Hotlanta Softball preps for upcoming season

imageAspiring jocks and returning veterans hit the athletic fields of Piedmont Park on Saturday for the the Hotlanta Softball League's annual preseason clinic.

With the season opener set for March 22, the clinic gave the league's coaches the opportunity to evaluate players and see if they're the right fit for any roster openings. The players worked through fielding and throwing drills before heading to a nearby cantina for some socializing.

Mini-camp opens gay flag football season

imageFlag football returned to Piedmont Park on Saturday.

The National Flag Football League of Atlanta held its mini-camp on the park's athletic fields to meet and greet new players, potential recruits and returning veterans in advance of the gay league's April 18 start. Team captains and league officials ran players through drills on passing, blocking and snatching the flags off an opponent during the two-hour session. The league wants to boost its rosters to nearly 100 players.

‘Hooch’ hits tennis courts at Piedmont Park

imageSwing by Piedmont Park this weekend and you're likely to hear the unmistakable sounds of tennis balls being thwacked by rackets.

The Atlanta Team Tennis Association hits the courts from Thursday to Sunday for its annual Chattahoochee Doubles Classic, which last year attracted more than 100 gay and lesbian tennis players. Weather is expected to be much better than the 2008 event, which suffered through rain on opening night and frigid temperatures for the remainder of the competition.

Leagues hold Spring Training this weekend

imageSpring Training for two of Atlanta's gay sports leagues is set for this weekend. And thankfully, it all unfolds in Piedmont Park.

On Saturday, the National Flag Football League of Atlanta kicks off its season with a meet and greet for players and prospective recruits. The league has 74 players heading into its season, which opens play with preseason games on March 28, and hopes to reach at least 96. So join the league from 10 a.m. to noon at the athletic fields in the Oval.

Muddy match doesn’t slow Bucks rugby

imageThe Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club didn't let a little rain and mud slow them down Saturday. In fact, they seemed to relish in it.

The Bucks continued their spring season on Saturday against High Country on a rain-drenched and muddy field at Coan Middle School in Kirkwood. The Bucks are half-way through their eight-game schedule and entered the High Country match at 1-2.
