Softball season ready to roll

The gay softball season in Atlanta is about to heat up.

Three teams from the Hotlanta Softball League are looking to repeat as North American champions, while the upstart Decatur Women’s Sports League is adding teams for its second season.

For about two months, softball fields in Tucker and southwest Fulton County will be full of gay and lesbian players, with the Decatur-based league playing on Fridays and HSL keeping its traditional Sunday slots. DWSL opens on March 21; HSL on March 30.

I talked with the heads of both leagues – HSL’s Emerson Ross and DWSL’s Anne Barr – for my Southern Voice sports column:

The championships won by HSL’s Atlanta Venom, Wet Demons and Atlanta Riptide last October were the most ever captured by HSL in a single year, providing a nice challenge for the new season, according to Ross.

“Hopefully, we will be able to match or bring more home,” Ross said. “We have a good chance of bringing home some trophies again.”

“I’m totally excited and we have a lot of enthusiasm,” Barr said. “The phone is ringing off the hook. We are going to continue to keep growing with whatever needs that come up. If we have 30 teams, we will find a way.”
