Smyrna cop investigated for gay sex with teen

A Smyrna police officer is under investigation for seeking gay sex from a 15-year-old after the teen's mother discovered their alleged relationship thanks to sexting and a photo of a man dressed in women's underwear.

The teen's mother says the Smyrna officer often hired her son to walk their dog, but she discovered the teen inside the officer's apartment when she searched for him one night, according to CBS 46.

The mother said her son had not returned home one evening, so she went to the officer's apartment looking for her child. “

“When I went up to knock on the door it took about 5 minutes for them to open the door,” said the mother. “You could hear them walk up to the door and look out the peep-hole. They walked away, and they told me they were coming. My son opened the door.”

She took her son home and took his cell phone. The mother said she found inappropriate text messages on her son's phone. She said the officer also sent a picture of a man in women's lingerie.

When the mother complained, Smyrna police turned to Cobb police and the department's Crimes Against Children Unit, Cobb police spokesperson Sgt. Dana Pierce told Project Q Atlanta. But Cobb investigators didn't turn up enough to warrant criminal charges, Pierce said.

“At the request of the Smyrna Police Department, we are looking at a case allegedly involving one of their officers. Since that investigation, it has been turned back to Smyrna police. With our investigation, to date, we have not filed any charges,” Pierce said.

On Monday, Smyrna police declined to discuss the case with WSB.

“The Smyrna Police Department has received a complaint alleging an officer has been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a juvenile male. Being that this is an active investigation we are not able to release information at this time,” read the statement.

It's at least the third high-profile case in which Georgia law enforcement officials were busted on allegations that they sought gay sex with teens. In October, the GBI arrested Molena Police Chief James Roberts on two counts of solicitation of sodomy and one count of theft by conversion. In August, DeKalb police arrested Henry County Sheriff's Deputy David McCart for allegedly agreeing to meet a 14-year-old for sex, though the underage teen was actually an undercover officer.
