Size matters: Big, gay Easter bonnets [photos]

“In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, you’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade. I’ll be all in clover, and when they look you over, I’ll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade.”

Irving Berlin got it so right – and even if inadvertently, so gay – that his song from the 1948 movie of the same name is the perfect the theme for Atlanta’s gay Easter celebrations. Of course, that includes the annual Armorettes Easter Drag Races day of gay-ified relay games and cocktails on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.

This year’s Drag Races, the biggest of gay Easter traditions, then moves from the packed Ansley Square parking lot into Burkhart’s for the Men In Undies Fun-raiser for PALS sponsored by Brushstrokes and modeled by the Rainbow Trout swim team at 6:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., it’s the Armorettes Easter Show.

But the opportunities to put your bonnet on display don’t end there. There’s the Easter Bonnet Runway Competition from MISTER on Saturday at 5 p.m. On Sunday, DJ Vicki Powell takes her Easter basket to Church for Easter Sunday Service. The spinning starts at 7 p.m.

“Easter Parade’s” own Fred Astaire and Judy Garland might make good inspirations for your topper, but we’ve also selected a Best-Of collection of gay Easter bonnet interpretations from years past to kick-start your creativity. Each photo comes with a few tips and snarky comments to spark your imagination. Hint: Bigger is better.

Now go grab that hot glue, rifle through your junk drawers, and get to work.
