Saturday’s World Cup of beer and boys

imageWhat’s better than a big gay beer bust on Saturday afternoon? How about two? Double your pleasure, indulge yourself in the World Cup, and help raise funds for Hotlanta Soccer Association and Hotlanta Softball League’s Wet Demons.

First up, the guys of Hotlanta Soccer (top photo) host a viewing party of the USA’s first game of the World Cup at Frogs Cantina at 1 p.m. To get you in the spirit—and into the spirits–$10 bottomless beer and $6.99 Patron margaritas are on the menu. The guys also plan to sell auxiliary memberships and 2010 t-shirts to their loving supporters.

“We’re excited,” says Joe Organ, president of HSA. “We don’t do fundraisers all that often, and to be able to tie it in with such an amazing event makes it all that much better.”

HSA hopes to raise more than $1,000 to offset the costs of field rentals and to serve as a “scholarship” for players who otherwise wouldn’t have the financial resources to participate.

It also “helps to alleviate some of the stress that comes along with maintaining the association, playing year round and sometimes sharing entirely too small hotel rooms with too many teammates,” Organ says. “Whether you want to watch the game, are interested in playing, have questions about the sport, or just want to drink a cold beer on a hot day with some great people, come one come all!”

The soccer boys also want you to keep something else in mind.

“We want to encourage people to come and watch us play,” Organ says. “We are a gay team in a straight league. The straight players bring their wives and kids all the time, and we’d love to have that same support from our ‘family.’”

imageAtlanta’s gay sports leagues are always very supportive of each other, and on that note, HSL’s Wet Demons (second photo) will attend the HSA party before their own beer bust at Joe’s on Juniper begins at 3 p.m.

“Anyone who brings a wrist band from the Hotlanta Soccer Beer Bust will get a wristband at our event for half off ($5),” says Coach Aaron Sones of the Wet Demons. “We really want to stress that if folks are looking for something to do tomorrow afternoon, or want some cheap refreshments while supporting Atlanta’s gay sports teams, to try to attend both events.”

The beer busts are going to be a blast, Sones says.

“The turnout for our last beer bust was incredible, and we are expecting a similar turnout tomorrow,” he tells us. “Our theme for this one is a summer, beach/pool event. We will have super soakers, beach balls, and other methods for cooling everyone off in the hot sun. Of course, we’ll have our bottomless beer ($10 all you can drink), and we have more than 500 Jell-O shots ready, as well as other shooters.”

Can you up that ante for us, Aaron?

“There will be some shirtless guys selling the shots,” he says. “We are especially excited that Mary Norwood will make a guest appearance around 4:30.”

Thanks. (And if you need more motivation, check out the photos from the beer bust the Wet Demons held in March.)

Proceeds from the HSL event help send the team to the NAGAAA Softball Gay World Series, should they qualify for a berth.

“Two berths are awarded to our division, and right now we are tied for second place,” Sones says.

Need more reasons than beer, boys and beachy goodness before you decide to go?

“Beer busts at Joe’s are so much fun,” Sones says. “Shirtless boys, super soakers, beer, Jell-O shots, good music, and Mary Norwood, all under one roof. This is a great way to have a good time with your friends and make some new ones. We’ll have different methods available to cool you off (some are a secret). Anyone and everyone is invited to come.”

Oh, alright. Twist our arms. See you there.
