Rugby wrap: Bucks, Cohen and a kissing scrum

The season might be looking up for the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club. Struggling with a winless start to their winter season, the 0-3 Bucks face the Nashville Grizzlies on Saturday, a team they have historically dominated.

When the teams meet, it will also mark the first all-gay match for the Bucks this season. The Grizzlies, like the Bucks, are gay rugby clubs. The only other gay match on the schedule for the Bucks – outside of a rematch in Nashville with the Grizzlies on March 29 – is May 10 against the Charlotte Royals, which closes the 10-game season.

The match on Saturday, which was rescheduled to take place at 1 p.m. in Atlanta, comes after the Bucks lost to the Birmingham Vulcans over the weekend. But Bullet Manale, the team’s president, says the Bucks continue to improve.

“We’re still building,” he says. “For the third week, we built upon what we’ve been doing. It’s about building our skills to be competitive.”

The Bucks have owned the Grizzlies, winning shut-out matches in February 2007 and October 2006. Manale says the teams share a friendly rivalry.

“A lot of the guys are looking forward to it. It’s good to have that brotherly fraternity thing with another team. We are pretty close to the Nashville team,” he says.

cohen_ben_blog.jpgSpeaking of gay rugby, English rugby star Ben Cohen made news last year when he announced plans for a night in London to salute his gay fans. The event is set for May 28. Cohen recently conducted a frank Q&A with Outsports.com. Among the juicy tidbits:

Outsports: What has been the reaction to the idea so far? Have you been surprised by the reaction?

Ben Cohen: I just noticed that I was getting more attention. My website stats were shooting up and when I looked where the links were coming from, I could see that 90 percent of them were from gay blog sites. The biggest surprise I got was knocking David Beckham off the top slot in the Sunday Times Gay Icon list. I was gob smacked quite frankly.

If all that’s not enough, check out this amusing clip of a make-out session that breaks out between two rugby players. Thanks to Outsports for the post.
