‘Rugby 101’ training set for Saturday

Maybe you’ve heard the terms – ruck, scrum, maul – and wondered what they meant. Now there’s a chance to find out.

With a new season on the horizon, the Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club wants to train some new recruits. They’ll have the opportunity on Saturday during “Rugby 101,” the winter version of a primer the club holds twice a year to show rugby newbies what the sport is all about.

“It’s an introduction to rugby, the club and rugby skills, giving names to the fundamentals of what we do,” says Bullet Manale, the club’s president.

Last August, the session drew about 15 people for a primer on tackling, passing, rucks, scrums and mauls. Expect the same this weekend during the three-hour session in Kirkwood. Check in is set for 10:30 a.m. with training beginning at 11 a.m. And holding true to tradition, the club will move to the newly-refurbished Blake’s after the training for its “Third Half Rugby Social.”

The session also serves as a tune-up for veterans, who kick off their winter season on Jan. 22 against the High Country Rugby Football Club, which is also based in Atlanta. The 10-game season ends in May on the road in Charlotte. The club is also taking part in the Bingham Cup, the championships of the International Gay Rugby Association & Board. The event is set for June in Dublin.

On Saturday, pack your running shoes or cleats, warm athletic clothing (temps will be in the 40s during the event), towel and mouth guard. Proof of medical insurance doesn’t hurt, either.
