imageWhy walk when you can run? Nearly 1,400 people asked that question on Sunday as they laced up for the 5K Run portion of the AIDS Walk Atlanta.

Even with the record number of participants – some 800 people registered for the 2010 event; 1,377 this year – the results look about the same as a year ago. Three of the four top spots were captured by the same runners who took the crowns in 2010 on a course that started and finished in Piedmont Park with a run through Midtown.

imageGenesis Henderson shaved 27 seconds off his 2010 time to place first, crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 23 seconds. Myra Kucera again took the Females Masters top spot, with Todd Henry again claiming the Male Masters spot. The newbie to the winner’s circle? Jessica Doan, who captured the top women’s spot in 20 minutes, 41 seconds.

The 5K race kicks off the physical portion of the annual AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run, the 21st rendition of which played out in the park on Sunday — at least after participants carb loaded at brunch.
