Queers rallying to save Cheshire Bridge Road’s sexy parts

The debate over Cheshire Bridge Road's sexy parts reaches a climax on Thursday, with proposals from gay Atlanta City Council member Alex Wan getting a hearing before the Zoning Review Board.

The controversial proposals from Wan have drawn opposition from LGBT supporters of the corridor's eclectic and adult-oriented feel as well as an online petition from a small business owner who would be forced to relocate his longtime businesses on the street.

That opposition now includes Queer Up Atlanta, which hopes to rally supporters to attend the Zoning Review Board meeting on Thursday.

Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan and NPU-F are putting their zoning proposal for the Cheshire Bridge Rd. area up to vote on Thursday, May 9th and we need to be loud and present to tell the board "NO!". This proposal would help rid Cheshire Bridge Rd. of it's more sexual establishments - like Inserection and Bliss - while also relocating small businesses, majority owned by middle/low class people of color! Join QUEER UP! Atlanta and others in voicing our disdain of this proposal that would lead to the gentrification of one of Atlanta's most liberal and queer districts!

Wan, for his part, has become increasingly defiant when confronted with gay-led opposition to his rezoning efforts. Here's what he told the GA Voice:

“All of this has become a personal attack on my perceived morals and values and that’s not the case,” Wan said. “This conversation that I’m being a traitor to the LGBT community because of this … If the gay agenda is 24-hour bars and sex clubs, then the truth is I’m not the representative for that. And that’s how this argument seems to be crystallizing.

“This is my trying to honor a community’s vision. At the same time, I kind of take issue with this belief that I’ve turned on my community. Look at what I’ve done over the past three years — the passage of a resolution by the City Council to support same-sex marriage and Mayor Kasim Reed coming out in favor of marriage equality,” Wan said.

“If all of this doesn’t mean anything and all that is important to our community is supporting porn and sex clubs … well, I would hope our community has bigger goals and objectives,” he said. “If I’m going to be judged on the issue of just supporting porn and sex clubs, if that’s how the community feels at large, perhaps there may be a better candidate.”
