Charis throws birthday bash as it seeks funds, board members

Etiquette says it’s not quite proper to ask a lady her age. But the women of Charis Books & More don’t mind if you ask. In fact, they proudly proclaim that Saturday is their 37th birthday. And it comes as they make a pitch for donations and board members.

The store is a hybrid operation – its for-profit arm operates the retail portion, while the non-profit Charis Circle plans and funds its educational programming. Both are working on a new home, a feminist center that could top $1 million to open. But before that, there’s a party with authors, artists, cake, and a 10 percent discount on merchandise. It seems like it was just yesterday when we celebrated their 36th.

And as the birthday unfolds, Charis Circle is kicking off its fundraising campaign with a raffle for two iPads to generate funds for its programming. The non-profit also recently made a pitch for “experienced, dynamic people” to serve on the board and help move them toward their new feminist center.
