Project Q among Best of Gay Atlanta winners

imageWhen it comes to the Best of Gay Atlanta, the readers of Southern Voice have spoken.

Among the winners in the newspaper’s annual online contest? Project Q Atlanta as Best Gay Blog, beating out two other popular sites.

Former Southern Voice editor Matt Hennie launched Project Q Atlanta in 2008. The blog offers links to LGBT news stories in Southern Voice and other publications, frequent doses of beefcake to keep the boys reading, an events calendar, photos and some original reporting. Living Out Loud with Darian placed second. Third went to Falling into Grace, the MySpace blog of Martina Williams, who performs as Martina Diamante.

imageNot bad for a site that launched just 10 months ago.

Some other well known names and groups are also among the winners, including AID Atlanta (Best Local Non-Profit), Atlanta Pride (Best Gay Event), Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club (Best Gay Sports Team), Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse (Best Coffee Shop), Melissa Carter (Best Local Female Hero), Justin Ziegler (Best Up and Coming Activist), Vicki Powell (Best Local DJ) and Actor’s Express (Best Theater Troupe). imageThe paper held a reception to honor the recipients Friday at Callanwolde, the Gothic-Tutor style home of the Candler family (think Coca-Cola fortunes) on Briarcliff Road. The 27,000-square-foot mansion is now a fine arts center and is often host to gay and lesbian events. The Candler family should be pleased, as Coke was among the drink choices, though participants tended to favor the free wine and beer.
