A girl just wants a pretty dress. And a cocktail. You can relate. So can Atlanta’s gay do-gooders at For The Kid In All Of Us. The folks who bring you Toy Party and Backpack in the Park each year debuted their newest event, Project Prom, on Sunday.
For The Kid, the gay-led charity group that benefits Georgia’s less privileged children and teens, threw the cocktail bash and runway show with one goal in mind: hook up girls with prom dresses who may not otherwise be able to afford one.
Radio and television personality Holly Firfer hosted the runway show, which featured gowns by designers Vincent Martinez, Jason Bunin and Karron English, as well as from Grady High School’s Urban Couture Program, Becca’s Closet and Authentic Beauty. The designers reworked slightly worn dresses into prom-worthy fabulosity.
While the dresses strutted down the catwalk at the W Hotel Midtown, libations, food, music by DJ Vicki Powell lubricated the guests, and Miss Georgia Christina McCauley offered words of encouragement.
After the runway show, For The Kid gifted all of the creations to teens in hopes of making prom dreams come true. Proceeds from Project Prom ticket sales go toward making the prom experience complete with dinner at local restaurants.
