When a venerable Congressman, a big-city mayor and several elected officials mix with do-gooder drag queens at an upscale venue, it’s pretty easy to guess the event: Atlanta Pride’s VIP Party.

imageThe Oct. 8 event marked the traditional start to Atlanta Pride, but this year it shifted venues to the Oceans Ballroom at the Georgia Aquarium and served as a warm-up to what’s becoming one of the weekend’s biggest attractions – the kickoff party. That massive sell-out event drew a crowd of more than 4,000 people.

At the VIP event, staunch gay-rights supporter Rep. John Lewis (second photo left) joined Mayor Kasim Reed, City Council members Alex Wan (second photo right) and Carla Smith, and other elected officials in kicking off a weekend of activities. They mixed with the Order of the Flaming Sugarbakers (top photo), an activist-minded drag troupe, and scores of Pride sponsors and supporters.

“I am very happy and very pleased to be here tonight to wish each and every one of you a happy and blessed Pride weekend. Enjoy, embrace it,” Lewis told the crowd.
