Piedmont Park ban loosened

Things are looking up — at least a little — for Piedmont Park.

The crown jewel of Atlanta’s park system, it’s been on near lockdown since January for most organized spots competition and all large-scale festivals. The long-running drought prompted the tightening of restrictions.

But now comes word from the Piedmont Park Conservancy that its athletic fields are opening again for organized league play. That means the return of the Hotlanta Softball League‘s Fall Ball, which opens Sept. 21, and the National Flag Football League of Atlanta‘s fall season, which opens sometime after Labor Day. The soccer fields are again open, too, though the Hotlana Soccer Association takes part in a league that plays its games in a facility near Spaghetti Junction.

Park officials will keep a close watch on the field and if the pitch deteriorates, they will again shut down the athletic fields, according to Darrel McCook, a Conservancy spokesperson.

“We will continue to evaluate the fields as the season progresses to make sure that field conditions do not deteriorate,” McCook says. “In the event that conditions do deteriorate it may be necessary to close the fields to play once again. Our goal is to serve the public while maintaining healthy fields and courts.”

Large-scale events like the Atlanta Pride Festival, though, remain banned from the park.
