Philip Bonneau exposes his ‘Ugly Simple Truths’

You’ve seen his take on “Heroes + Villains” and a viral gay Spider-Man kiss, but gay Atlanta never saw its resident artist and photographer Philip Bonneau so raw as during the Friday opening of his latest works at Suite Spot.

The home store proved just the place for Bonneau (top photo, second from left) to reveal himself and his “Ugly Simple Truths,” an exhibit of works that transport viewers to a darker place than his comic-inspired works. “Truths” unveils issues most people like to keep hidden. The collection takes on mental health and emotional issues including addiction, depression, HIV stigma, personal battles, relationships and more.

Bonneau expressed gratitude that the show touched so many visitors.

“Never in my life have I seen art evoke so much outward emotion from people. Truly the highest compliment an artist could ever receive.”

The opening reception, which also included a “confessional” for art lovers to write down their secret “ugly truth,” led to huge sales of the 23 first-round framed prints in the set. By Tuesday, two of the final, second-round prints are also gone. View the collection for sale online. None of them will be available for reprint after these sell out.
