Perimeter College holds anti-hate rally Tuesday

imageLGBT students at Georgia Perimeter College/Clarkston are mad as hell, and they’re not going to take hateful slurs scrawled last month on their interactive art installation for Coming Out Day.

The Triangle Club, the college’s gay student organization, built a full-scale closet at the campus student center to commemorate the Oct. 11 National Coming Out Day. Out students and faculty were encouraged to sign the closet and leave inspirational messages.

Days later, homophobic slurs and hate speech defaced the exhibit.

“This could happen on your campus, too,” says Steven Igarashi, the gay outreach coordinator at AID Atlanta, who is helping drum up support for a Tuesday rally on the campus courtyard.

The United Against Hate rally aims to unite campus organizations and draw attention to the harmful effect that Hate Speech has on everyone.

“I encourage you to join your LGBT brothers and sisters at this rally,” Igarashi says. “An attack on any of us is an attack on all of us!”

The rally is set for 2 p.m. on the Clarkston campus. The event is the latest in a series of public protests that have seen renewed vigor since Atlanta rallies–including those against California’s Proposition 8 last year (photo) and this year’s police raid of the Atlanta Eagle–drew widespread attention to those causes.
