Peachtree Road Race to crash Pride

In a befuddling move, the Peachtree Road Race is expected to announce Tuesday that the signature event will put its finish line at the intersection of Juniper Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that race organizers – pushed out of Piedmont Park along with Atlanta Pride and other large events – opted for the Midtown ending for the July Fourth race. But that means the 55,000 people that take part in the event, once they cross the finish line, will be ushered four blocks away to the Atlanta Civic Center for the awards stage and sponsors village.

That’s right in the middle of Atlanta Pride, which moved to the civic center when the city closed its parks to large-scale festivals. Though the road race will end before Pride kicks into high gear later that same day, the mix of tens of thousands of runners with the Pride venue as finishing touches are being put on it sets up a logistical nightmare.

The potential for damage to Pride, already having to reengineer the entire weekend because of the move out of Piedmont, is high. It will take a heaping of finesse from organizers of both events to avoid either one suffering serious damage.
