Concerned that authors may now skip Atlanta’s sizable LGBT population, the owners of gay retail outlet Brushstrokes have a solution: A bar by night, but a smoke-free author space by day.

Mark Jackson and Tom Schloeder (photo), who celebrated the store’s 22nd anniversary in December, tell the GA Voice they are in discussions with the owners of Mixx to host author meet-and-greets. The retail store and the smoke-free bar share a parking lot in the Ansley Square Shopping Center.

“Space is a serious consideration and was the main reason we didn’t seek author signings in the past. Mixx is the perfect location because it’s non-smoking and convenient to the store,” Schloeder said today.

The discussions were prompted by the recent closing of Outwrite, which regularly hosted big-name author appearances. The store closed Thursday and filed for bankruptcy with more than $508,000 in debt.
