New basketball, softball leagues ready to roll

Grab the ball of your choice and get ready for some action. The Decatur Women’s Sports League is just a few days away from launching new bowling and basketball leagues for women in the city known as a lesbian enclave.

anne_barr_cropped.jpgAnne Barr (pictured), a veteran softball player and coach, is the force behind the new effort, which grew out of the successful softball league she started last March. Barr wants to organize about 75 people for the bowling league, which opens play on Jan. 9, and six teams of 10 players each for basketball, which starts Jan. 10. Each season will run 10 weeks.

Barr talked with me recently for my Southern Voice sports column, explaining that she hopes the new leagues provide opportunities for lesbians who want to take part in a team sport without an overly competitive atmosphere.

“They don’t want to play competitively, they want to play at a level where they feel comfortable at whatever skill level they are at and make friends. It is a great way to get some exercise, meet friends and be community oriented,” Barr said.
