Mold spoils gay-fave Joe’s health inspection

image imageMold in the ice machine, bare hands touching the grub and food stored on the floor helped gay-popular Joe’s on Juniper in Midtown fail a recent health inspection. It’s a good thing a packed beer bust for the Wet Demons of the Hotlanta Softball League on Saturday took place after the restaurant says it remedied the problems and paid for a re-inspection that garnered them a passing grade. But even if they hadn’t, the mold was in the ice machine; the beer consumed on Saturday came from – we’re making an assumption here – mold-free kegs. Joe’s failed a March 16 inspection from the state Department of Community Health with a sad 63 out of a possible 100. What Now Atlanta? offered the details in their monthly take on restaurants failing to meet health standards. The takeaway in the inspection report? Joe’s employees – cute waiters notwithstanding – on occasion don’t wash their hands, don’t wear gloves when handling food and are overly bedazzled in jewelry on their hands and arms. As for the restaurant’s food, it sometimes sits on dirty and unsanitary surfaces and is thawed using methods the state doesn’t recommend. Then there’s that mold in the ice machine. Oh, and in general, the physical facilities aren’t, well, clean. Since the embarrassment of failing what seems to be a pretty easy test to pass – they received an 85 in January -- Joe’s has scrubbed up, removed the mold, and – we’re making an assumption here – sat employees down for a chat about cleanliness. That mold? They’ve been dinged for it before, but managing partner Alice Masker tells the GA Voice it’s “not pervasive.” Next time, invite the health inspector to the beer bust. It’s difficult to see mold -- or care -- after a few beers. UPDATE: A follow-up inspection on March 28 netted a perfect score of 100, according to an inspection report posted Wednesday on Joe's Facebook page.
