You know a drag queen – even an amateur one – doesn’t disappoint. Pair one with some hunky models strutting about in summer swimwear and a fun Atlanta Cotillion evening is in the making.
So McCracy Iona “Mona” Fitzjohn – Miss Mona for short; John Weathers for his day job (second photo right with partner Rad Slough) – took over Urban Body Studios in Midtown on July 30 for an evening of music, fashion, silent auction and yes, cocktails. Even margaritas. They dubbed it “Miss Mona’s Hot Summer’s Night of Cocktails, Crooning & Catwalks.” Indeed.
There was DJ Jay McCracken providing the music — at least between sets by local gay singing talents Frisky Monkey and Guyton Maurice – and fashions from Drew Lewis. The Midtown boutique has also boosted the fundraising efforts of Cotillion debutante Ricardo Sosa (bottom photo right), who held a fashiontastic event at the store in early July. Yes, there were shirtless models there, too.
It’s been a busy season of fundraising for the local league of extraordinary gentlemen who take on glamour drag alter egos at the Atlanta Cotillion Ball, which is Sept. 17. Sosa also hosted a cocktail fundraiser in June that attracted Fulton County Commissioner Joan Garner among a long list of attendees. Deb J.D. Kellum — Jacqueline D’Bouvier VonSeco — hosted a Fourth of July Fiesta and the Water Fireworks Pool Party in June.
There’s also been the egg-themed Egg-stravaganza in May, the Mayday T-Dance and the Cotillion’s season launch at Saks in April.
The deb who raises the most cash for AID Atlanta is crowned Cotillion Queen at the ball.
The annual Cotillion Cabaret & SIlent Auction takes on a Burlesque theme on Aug. 14, and Miss Mona strikes again on Aug. 27 with the Summer Saturday at the Pool.
