Meet Ted Cruz’s merry band of Georgia bigots

As U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz rolls into Atlanta this weekend, he made it clear that during his Southern swing he’s surrounding himself with some of Georgia’s best anti-gay trolls.

The presidential campaign of the Texas Republican, already built around going apoplectic over gay issues, announced his leadership team in Georgia. Spoiler: It’s a merry band of “courageous conservatives” stacked with some of the state’s most polished politicians for crazed rants and “religious freedom.”

“Georgia is a crucial state to the 2016 election and I am looking forward to working alongside the stronghold of courageous conservatives who work tirelessly to defend conservative principles across the state,” Cruz said. “The team we have put together has unparalleled experience running and winning campaigns at the grassroots level. I am honored and excited to have their enthusiastic support as we spread our message in Georgia and across the region.”

Cruz made the announcement ahead of his appearance on Saturday at the RedState Gathering in Atlanta. That’s the GOP presidential sleepover with anti-gay troll and WSB pundit Erick Erickson. If you can’t enough of Cruz there, he’s on a bus tour with post-RedState stops in Newnan and Columbus.

Here’s a rundown of the most anti-gay picks for Cruz’s leadership team.

JOB: Elected in 2015 as the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 10th Congressional district, which stretches between Atlanta and Augusta

NEW JOB: Georgia campaign chair for Cruz

PAST: Southern Baptist pastor and ranty radio host, gay sodomy expert

QUOTE: “I’ve known Sen. Cruz as a man of great strength of character and I’m deeply honored to serve in this role.”

CRAZIEST ANTI-GAY RANT: In his 2012 book, “It’s Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America,” Hice alleges the gay community has a secret plot to recruit and sodomize children. (He also claims that supporters of abortion rights are worse than Hitler and compares gay relationships to bestiality and incest. And Muslims? Strip them First Amendment rights.

BEST GAY TAKEDOWN: Two guys in drag set to Vanilla Ice’s 1989 hit “Ice Ice Baby.”

JOB: Georgia State Senator for District 29 in Columbus

SIDE JOB: Attorney for anti-gay wingnut

NEW JOB: Georgia co-chair for Cruz

QUOTE: McKoon told the AJC that Cruz proved to be a true conservative who was “willing at times to buck party leadership when a matter of principle is at stake.” He also said the candidate will be a forceful advocate for conservative ideals. “I believe he will be the strongest possible voice for conservatives on the stage with the Democratic nominee,” said McKoon.

PAST: Sponsor for “religious freedom” legislation in the Georgia Legislature panned by critics as an anti-gay effort to undermine marriage equality and non-discrimination ordinances across the state. He’s a sleazy loser who argues that bigotry is too “elastic” for him to really care about it.

Honorable Mention

The Cruz team in Georgia also named several McKoon allies as co-chairs, including Sens. Mike Crane, Marty Harbin and William Ligon. All three voted for McKoon’s “religious freedom” legislation earlier this year, before the anti-gay measure flamed out in the state House as lawmakers attempted to add LGBT protections.

Crane made it clear that, despite McKoon arguing otherwise, the “religious freedom” effort was “intertwined” with gay marriage. “Ultimately at the end of the day, the Supreme Court is ruling on what God says is valid or not. And this is very much a question of faith,” Crane told the AJC.
