Marietta state rep ‘afraid’ of the gays, Mormons

image imageWhat keeps Judy Manning up late at night? Not her high school sweetheart husband of 35 years, but the gays who marry and Mormons who want to be president. The wingnuts just keeping coming at the Gold Dome. Manning is also known as state Rep. Judy Manning, a 12-year veteran of the State Capitol who does things like serve as chair of the Children & Youth Committee. She’s a Republican who reps a district in Marietta, the city that was once also home to state Rep. Bobby Franklin. Franklin’s death last year meant the loss of a rabidly anti-gay wingnut who did things like compare the gays to drug dealers. But his death apparently left enough oxygen at the State Capitol to fill the lungs of Manning, who’s now speaking up about why she’s backing Newt Gingrich for president. Yes, that rabidly anti-gay wingnut. In an interview with the Marietta Daily Journal, Manning sounded off on why she’s got a ticket on Gingrich’s anti-gay express. Most of it centered on her argument that Mitt Romney sucks. But more specifically, the gays.

“When he was the governor of Massachusetts he performed 100 — and I’m not sure this number is right, but my mind says it’s about 180 gay marriages — and now, when he is running as president on the Republican ticket, he says that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Manning said.
And the Mormons.
“I think Mitt Romney is a nice man, but I’m afraid of his Mormon faith,” Manning said. “It’s better than a Muslim. Of course, every time you look at the TV these days you find an ad on there telling us how normal they are. So why do they have to put ads on the TV just to convince us that they’re normal if they are normal? … If the Mormon faith adhered to a past philosophy of pluralism, multi-wives, that doesn’t follow the Christian faith of one man and one woman, and that concerns me.”
Consider not only that Manning puts Mormons just a step ahead of those American-hating Muslims, but that her recollection of Romney's record on gay marriage is wrong. Romney has always opposed same-sex marriage. In 2004, as governor of Massachusetts, he instructed town clerks to issue marriage license to gay couples following a state Supreme Judicial Court decision legalizing them. He banned the issuing of licenses to out-of-state gay couples and in 2005, backed a state constitutional amendment that would have outlawed the unions. Gird your loins for more of Manning and her anti-gay friends as the Georgia General Assembly opens its legislative session on Monday. Surely she’ll offer more wingnut sound bites after her ladies who lunch sessions with the likes of Sue Ella Deadwyler. What can you do? Support Georgia Equality.
