Man robbed at gunpoint after leaving Mary’s

A trio of robbers brandishing assault weapons robbed a man after he left popular East Atlanta gay bar Mary's early Sunday, just weeks after a gay man was shot and his roommate killed during another attack.

The man told Atlanta police that he left Mary's about 2 a.m. on Sunday. When he neared the intersection of Glenwood and Blakes avenues, three men approached him, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

One man was carrying what looked like an AK-47 style rifle, the other gripped a semi-automatic pistol. It is unclear whether the third man in the group had a weapon, but the trio told the victim to hand over his cell phone and everything that was in his pockets, Jones said.

The victim, who was uninjured, couldn’t tell police if the robbers were on foot or had a nearby getaway car because they instructed him to turn his back to them and proceed walking east on Glenwood, Jones said. He was warned not to look back.

Police said the suspects appeared to be in their early 20s.

The robbery follows a May 25 shooting in East Atlanta that killed Patrick Cotrona and left Marcus Peden shot in the leg. Peden is gay and friends of Cotrona have said in social media posts that the two were boyfriends. Cotrona's killing remains unsolved, though police have said the shooting is linked to a pair of armed robberies that same night and possibly an earlier shooting in Grant Park.
