Man busted for gay sex assaults on UGA students

A 27-year-old Athens man is accused of preying on five male college students – most who attend UGA – and drugging them so he could sexually assault the men, according to an indictment.

Andre Montez Jones, 27, is accused of assaulting the men in a series of incidents between July 2013 and December 2015 in his Whistlebury Walk apartment in Athens. On May 31, a Clarke County grand jury indicted Jones on 10 counts – five felony counts of aggravated sodomy, three misdemeanor counts of sexual battery, one felony count of criminal damage to property and battery, a misdemeanor.

The indictment alleges that Jones assaulted four UGA students and a fifth man attending the University of North Georgia in Watkinsville. Jones would meet the men in bars in downtown Athens, invite them back to his apartment and then allegedly spike their drink with a substance to incapacitate them so he could perform oral sex on them, according to the indictment.

Jones was arrested in December after an 18-year-old man – shirtless, bloody with a swollen eye and scratches on his body – fled Jones' apartment after he says he woke up in Jones' bed as he performed oral sex on him. The men watched Netflix as they drank before the victim told police that he passed out, according to Online Athens:

“He says he didn’t remember anything after that until he woke up naked in Montez’s bed” with the suspect attempting to have oral sex with him, according to police.

After telling Jones he was not gay and “didn’t do things like that,” the student related to police that he got dressed and tried taking his phone from the suspect, at which time Jones allegedly started attacking him, according to police.

But the indictment claims that Jones had assaulted four other college students before the attack in December. Additional victims came forward after news reports about Jones' arrest. His approach was similar in all of the attacks: drug the men before performing oral sex against their will, according to the indictment.

The alleged attacks included two assaults in 2013 – on July 3 and Nov. 19 – one on Oct. 11, 2014 and two more in 2015 – Nov. 7 and Dec. 15.

Jones faces aggravated sodomy for each of the five assaults. But in three incidents – October 2014 and both in 2015 – he also was charged with sexual battery for touching the “intimate parts of the body” of his victim without consent. In the Dec. 15 attack, Jones was also charged with criminal damage to property and battery for allegedly smashing the victim's laptop and causing more than $500 in damage, and hitting the victim in the face and body as he tried to stop Jones from performing oral sex.

Police said there may be more victims, according to Online Athens.

There were others who made similar allegations against Jones.

“There were several other incidents reported, however, the decision was made not to indict those cases at this time,” said Lt. Jeff Clark, commanding officer of the Athens-Clarke County police Sex Crimes Unit.

Jones received a $10,000 bond after his December arrest. But when he was arrested in February after other victims came forward, a judge ruled he posed a “significant risk of fleeing” and ordered him held without bond, according to court documents.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court on June 17 for an arraignment.
