The gay-led First Metropolitan Community Church of Atlanta, a local congregation in the MCC group of churches founded with the LGBT faithful in mind, invites the public to join its members for an interfaith musical event to raise relief funds for victims of the Haiti earthquake on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.

“The devastation in Haiti calls on the human compassion all of us to urgently assist in any way that we can,” writes Rev. T. Paul Graetz, senior pastor at First MCC, in an e-mail announcing the event and asking for participants.

The event aims to weave together musical contributions and words of inspiration from community leaders, churches, synagogues and other spiritual communities. As plans for the event take shape, Graetz (photo) is asking for anyone interested in participating in the program to contact him at 404-325-4143, or by e-mail at {encode=”[email protected]” title=”[email protected]”}.

“We are inviting the community to come together and generously respond to the earthquake relief needs of this already impoverished country,” Graetz’s e-mail continues. “Would you help Atlanta come together to make a difference in the world?”

The plans for a local Atlanta fundraiser comes as other gay groups across the country are joining the Haitian relief efforts.

First MCC of Atlanta also holds weekly worship services each Sunday at 11 a.m.
