The LGBT lawyers of the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia and their legal friends gathered in an upscale ballroom last week to celebrate and honor colleagues.
Attendees at the 22nd Annual Dinner, again held inside the Egyptian Ballroom at the Fox Theatre, also heard from Mary Bonauto, a longtime LGBT activist and civil rights project director for the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders. She was also one of three attorneys who argued the gay marriage case before the U.S. Supreme Court in April 2015. It went pretty well.
The group also dished out several awards during the dinner. Merritt McAlister, Lori Surmay and Jim Outman received the Outstanding Service to the Stonewall Community Award; the Council of Probate Court Judges of Georgia received the Conspicuous Service to the Stonewall Community Award; and Jeff Cleghorn received the Longtime Service to the Community Award.
Attendees included Fulton County State Court Judge Jane Morrison and her partner Joan Garner, who is a member of the Fulton County Commission; state Rep. Taylor Bennett; and Cathy Woolard, a former Atlanta City Council president who is running to become the city's first-ever gay mayor.
The LGBT legal group called the Oct. 27 event its largest and most well-attended yet. It's fun year after year.
