LGBT Atlanta celebrated the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., during the 17th Annual Bayard Rustin-Audre Lorde Breakfast by honoring transgender activist Dee Dee Chambers and two social justice advocates who passed away last year.
With the theme “Love Letters Across the Generations: Honoring Our Elders,” the event on Monday attracted a large crowd to the Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta. Chambers, a longtime trans activist, received the Local Hero Award for her work as CEO of LaGender and other LGBT advocacy efforts.
The event also celebrated the life of Joan Garner, who died in April. Garner was a longtime social justice activist and the first lesbian elected to the Fulton County Commission. Organizers also honored HIV activist Antron-Reshaud Olukayode, who died in November.
Longtime LGBT and HIV activists Craig Washington and Darlene Hudson launched the annual breakfast in 2002 as a way to remember the legacy of activist Bayard Rustin and poet Audre Lorde.
