A lesbian couple says they were insulted with anti-gay slurs and then physically assaulted early Saturday in Midtown, an incident made worse for its timing: The Atlanta Pride celebration was in full swing.

Kathryn Katalinich and Brooke Creef say two men yelled anti-gay epithets as they left the W Atlanta Midtown to get into a cab. When they returned the verbal fire, the women say they were then attacked physically, according to Fox 5.

“One of the guys grabbed me and kept pushing me to the ground,” Creef says.

And when Katalinich tried to defend the couple, she was also assaulted.

“He throws me down on the ground, on my knees, and busts my knees up and I get back and he did it again and he was laughing. The second time he picked me and threw me back down,” Katalinich says.

As the assault unfolded, the women said they screamed yet bystanders didn’t help. The two men fled.

“Other people were just sitting there watching and that’s what blows my mind,” Creef says.

The couple hopes that surveillance video from the hotel might help track down who assaulted them. But that doesn’t always help.

A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department said on Monday that an incident report was filed with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department could not be immediately reached on Monday afternoon.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for the sheriff’s department says an incident report about the attack is not yet available.
