This is, after all, Candace Parker territory. And her fans were out in force on May 3 when the Atlanta Dream took to the court for the first time.
The Dream played the Los Angeles Sparks, the WNBA team that snatched up Parker just weeks after she led the Lady Vols to their second consecutive NCAA national championship. And therein is the connection between Parker and her fans in Atlanta, a city in the heart of SEC basketball and home to many fans of all things related to Tennessee sports.
I talked with several lesbian fans at the game for my Southern Voice sports column this week. They are eagerly anticipating the Dream’s home opener on May 23 and seeing players including Katie Feenstra (photo) in regular season action.
“For a group that had never played a game together, they looked pretty decent,” says Beth Schapiro, a season ticket holder who attended the game with her partner. “There was a lot of hustle and smart playing. They hold a lot of promise. It was an exciting night.”
