Kyle Keyser’s bungalow campaign fundraiser

Kyle Keyser, true to the grassroots activism that first fueled his fight against crime in the city and now feeds his campaign for mayor, was at the front gate to his house Saturday, greeting guests, collecting donations and sticking on wristbands.

It was, after all, a campaign fundraiser. But this wasn’t a grandiose affair.

The event took place inside the Little Five Points bungalow where he lives, with guests milling about on the porch with beer or cigarettes in hand and store-bought snacks on a table in the kitchen. A screen printing station was set up off the kitchen so guests could produce T-shirts emblazoned with “keyser 09” while they enjoyed cocktails, snacks and conversation.

imageHe qualified for the race just two weeks earlier, paying the $4,425 filing fee from funds raised in 48 hours through social media. Keyser has since spoken out about the Atlanta Police Department’s Sept. 10 raid at the Eagle and made a splash in a campaign led by three political heavyweights.

Yet even with his campaign focused on public safety — he launched Atlantans Together Against Crime earlier this year — Keyser was denied access to a Sept. 13 debate focusing on public safety. He’s being left out of debates Monday and Tuesday, too.

Time calls him a “political novice,” the AJC dubs him a “mayoral long shot” and the Loaf crowns him an “agent provocateur.” On Saturday, supporters were just happy to see a candidate that looked like them.
