imageThe Great Nationwide Kiss-In takes place Saturday in scores of cities across the U.S., including Atlanta and Athens. We asked the organizer of the Atlanta event, Alex Oxford, to share his motivation for putting together the protest. You can {encode=”[email protected]” title=”email”} Oxford with questions.

Hi everyone, I am Alex Oxford the Atlanta organizer for the National Kiss-in. I wanted to take a moment to write a post out to the community to tell a little about myself and what I’m doing.
After seeing what was going down in Utah and Texas, I was appalled by the lack of national response by the LGBT community, so I started seeking ways I could help. Quickly after the arrests took place, smaller movements around the country banded together to organize the National Kiss-In It’s a simple kissing demonstration taking place in cities across America.

After reading the list of cities, I was shocked to see that Atlanta didn’t have one scheduled. I’m not one to sit at the back and let things go with the flow, so I decided to step up in my young and inexperienced shoes and take hold of things and get Atlanta to kissin’.
I’m still in high school and I feel that the kiss-in will bring attention not only to important gay social issues, but also to young activists who need inspiration to get out there and really take charge to bring attention to issues that are often ignored by our media, and citizens. You are never too young to get active, nor are you too young to make a difference. That is why I’m doing what I’m doing.
I hope to see all of you Saturday at Piedmont Park in front of the visitor’s center at 2 p.m. Let’s lock lips in protest to the arrests that have taken place across the states. (View the full event listing.)
