Bottoms joins Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms on Tuesday announced her official enrollment in Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination, a bipartisan coalition dedicated to securing LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination protections at all levels of government.

Bottoms joins fellow Georgia mayors Patti Garrett (Decatur), Melanie Hammet (Pine Lake) and Ted Terry (Clarkston) in the 300-plus member nationwide coalition. Former mayors Kasim Reed (Atlanta) and Jannquell Peters (East Point) joined last year when the coalition was founded.

“The City of Atlanta is the cradle of the Civil Rights movement in America and we continue to value the protection of all human rights,” Bottoms said in a prepared statement. “Joining Mayors Against LGBT Discrimination is another important step towards protecting the dignity and freedom of all who call Atlanta home.”

The announcement continues a busy month on the LGBT front for the newly-minted mayor, who beat LGBT ally Mary Norwood in last December’s runoff election. Bottoms announced during her May 2 State of the City address that she would be creating a new office of diversity and inclusion and an LGBTQ advisory board. On May 4, she appointed Malik Brown as the city’s first full-time LGBTQ liaison and unveiled the 33-member LGBTQ advisory board. And on May 6, she made her first HRC Atlanta Gala Dinner & Auction address as mayor.
