Joan Garner rallies her gays for re-election

The lesbian who trail blazed her way onto the Fulton County Commission four years ago made it clear to LGBT supports on Wednesday that she wants another term. To get it, she'll need their help.

Joan Garner won a 2010 election to become the first openly gay member of the commission. Now, she's kicking her re-election into high gear and gathered with supporters to talk up the race and collect donations during a reception in Midtown.

Several elected officials joined the event, including state Reps. Simone Bell and Keisha Waites, two of the state's three openly gay state lawmakers; Fulton County Commissioner Rob Pitts; and state Rep. Pat Gardner. Garner beat Waites in a July 2010 primary run-off on her way to winning her first term. In 2012, Waites won a seat in the state House.

Gay attorney Kyle Williams, who is campaigning for the Georgia Senate, also attended Garner's fundraiser. So did Judge Jane Morrison. But that's not surprising. Garner and Morrison, an attorney who won office in 2012, are longtime partners. Garner even robocalls for her.

The primary election is May 20. Republican-led redistricting means Garner, elected to the District 6 post, is running for the District 4 seat. Georgia Eqaulity has already endorsed Garner's re-election bid.
